In 1946, in the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, the first program of postgraduate studies in Greece was founded entitled "Professional Degree in Electronics and Radioelectrology".
In the framework of the above program the "Degree in Control and Computing" was founded as a second specialization of the original postgraduate program. From 1972 and up to 1989 the two specialization fields operated with common core curriculum. In 1989, the partial separation of their curriculum was established.
Today, the interfaculty postgraduate program between the Faculties of Physics and Informatics is the adaptation of the above specializations to the Law 2083/1992 and was founded in April 1994. Since, the curriculum has been continuously modified to adapt to the latest advances of Science and Technology. The latest modification has been performed in 2018.
The organization of the Postgraduate Program has matured among the Staff members of the Faculties of Physics and Informatics mainly due to:
A) Their active participation in:
B) The significant participation in major national and European research and Development Programs.
C) Their international experience since many faculty members of the Department have worked in research institutes and universities abroad.
D) Their supervision of several PhD Dissertations.
For the design of the Postgraduate Program, the most recent advances in Electronics, Communications, Computers and Informatics, as well as the trends in the national and European labor market have been taken into account. Several Community studies, directives and documents have been used, as well as Directives from other independent Organizations. The potential of the mother Faculties has also been used, as determined by the human resources (Professors, Researchers, associate staff of Companies and Organizations), the available infrastructure (rooms, libraries, equipment, expertise), various financial resources and international collaborations. Strategic choice was to achieve the highest possible degree of consistency and integration of the combination "undergraduate - graduate - specialization" so that the graduate to possess knowledge as completeand specialized as possible.
After a thorough study and analysis of the above, a total of twenty (20) graduate courses were selected for the specialization in Electronics and Radioelectronics and nineteen (19) for the specialization in Electronic Automation. The curriculum includes a dissertation in the final semester.
The accepted students normally represent the 30% of the total number of candidates. Candidates are university graduates in Greece and abroad, mainly in Physics, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Military Schools. Among the candidates there are also teachers from secondary level schools and technical colleges, civil servants, employees of OTE, Power Company, and Banks as well as professionals from the private sector. Furthermore, applications have been received from expatriates and foreigners, from whom those who meet the selection criteria have been accepted.
