19404 Numerical Methods - Applications to Geophysical Fluids

Course Content
- Introduction, basic knowledge of numerical integration.
- Numerical schemes. Finite differences, precision, errors.
- Solution of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE): Convergence, stability, error propagation, stiff ODE. Parabolic Partial Differential Equations (PDE): Numerical schemes (implicit and explicit), convergence and stability criteria, error propagation, boundary conditions. Application to heat transfer equation.
- Elliptical PDE: Convergence and stability criteria, error propagation, initial and boundary conditions. Application to Laplace and Poisson equations.
- Hyperbolic PDE: Convergence and stability criteria, error propagation, initial and boundary conditions. Application to wave equation.
- Applications, code development.
