Course outline
Course content
- Algorithms and their implementation on computers. Numerical calculations and uncertainties. Truncation and rounding errors in numerical solutions. Frequency diagrams (histograms).
- Random number generators. Inverse transform method. Rejection sampling. Introduction to the Monte-Carlo method for integration and simulation of stochastic physical problems.
- Solution of algebraic equations of one variable and linear systems of equations. Applications to simple physics problems.
- Fitting using the least squares method, polynomial interpolation, and their applications in laboratory measurements.
- Numerical differentiation, numerical integration, and their applications to problems in basic physics.
- Numerical solution of ordinary differential equations of 1st order, 2nd order, and systems. Applications to simple physics problems.
