Course Content

  • Introduction: Stars, galaxies.
  • Galaxy morphology: Photometry, connection between morphological and dynamical phenomena.
  • Mapping the Galaxy: Dynamics of stars, gas and dust, rotation of the Galaxy, dark matter, rotation curves.
  • Potential theory: Spherical systems, flattened systems.
  • Galactic systems: Groups, clusters, dark matter in clusters, gravitational lenses.
  • Distribution of Galaxies in the Universe: Large scale distribution, observations of primordial galaxies, formation and evolution of galactic structures.
  • Evolution of galaxies: Gas accretion, bars, supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei, pseudo-bulges.
