Course Content

  • Wired telecommunication networks. Review of developments in backbone and access networks. Types of Telecommunication networks in terms of switching techniques and architecture. Telecommunication network layers and functions. Convergence and broadband. Next Generation Networks (NGN) and Intelligent Networks (IN).
  • Trunk networks. Optical technology (brief review). Bandwidth utilization in optical systems. Implementation of WDM optical systems. From the PDH and SONET/SDH Hierarchies to the optical layer (Optical Transport Network). Current trends and the Ethernet Physical Layer. Gigabit Ethernet. MPLS, MPLS and IPoWDM.
  • Metropolitan optical networks (MAN). Characteristics of PON and AON (p2p Ethernet) networks. APON, EPON, BPON – GPON and WDM –PON technologies.
  • Access Networks. Overview and basic architectures. The evolution and technologies of modern access networks. xDSL Telecommunication Access Networks. Next Generation Access Networks. Fiber to the Curb/Cabinet (FTTC). Fiber to the Building (FTTB), FTTC/B+VDSL2 architectures. Characteristics, Dispute Limitations. Vectoring and G-Fast techniques. Fiber to the Home (FTTH).
  • Ιssues related to the liberalization of the Telecommunications Market. Telecommunications Policies and Regulations in the field of Administration and Finance of telecommunications networks and infrastructures.
