Course Content

  • Wireless links fundamentals. What is an antenna. Various types of antennas and antenna parameters.
  • Electromagnetic radiation fundamentals. Maxwell's equations in free space and retarded potentials.
  • Analysis of antennas with known current distribution: short dipole or Hertz dipole, linear dipole with arbitrary length, half-wave dipole.
  • Radiation intensity and pattern, directivity, gain, effective height and effective antenna aperture, Friis equation, polarization, radiation resistance, input impedance, antenna temperature.
  • Analysis of the radiation field of an arbitrary antenna, radiation vector. Special antenna cases: small circular loop, linear travelling-wave antenna, large circular loop, small square loop.
  • Introduction to antenna arrays, mirroring effect and antennas above perfect ground, rhombic antenna.
  • Linear antenna arrays, uniform linear antenna arrays.
  • Equivalent sources, loads and currents, application of reciprocity theorem toreceiving antennas, antenna self impedance, antenna resonance, receiving antennas, near-field of a dipole, dipole impedance, basic theorems, power transmission to the receiver.
  • Main antenna types: Yagi-Uda, dipole with angle reflector, biconical antenna, helical antenna, spiral antenna, logarithmic antenna, aperture antenna, and microstrip antenna.
  • Active and smart antennas.
  • Laboratory exercises: antenna matching and measurement of antenna radiation pattern.
